Links That Do Not Open

A link to a page that is gone sends readers nowhere, and an AI agent learns nothing from it. Pulse checks the links from a page to other Confluence pages, and every link that does not open costs the page points.

Pulse checks the links of a page as you, at the moments you are working on it: while you edit the page, and when you open its Page vitals. It asks Confluence for each linked page, in your name, and Confluence answers with what you are allowed to know.

A link can fail to open for two reasons, and Pulse keeps them apart:

  • The page is in the trash. Confluence shows the trash to space and site admins, so only they learn that a page was deleted. Pulse then says the link leads to a page that no longer exists.
  • The page does not open for you. It may never have existed, may have been deleted for good, may be restricted, or may live in a space you cannot see. Pulse cannot know which, and it never claims more than it knows: it says the link does not open for you, because it may open for others.

Both cost the same: 5 points a link, at most 15, in one Must fix step of the coach.

Each person’s score counts the links that person checked. An author who cannot see a restricted page sees that link as not opening; a colleague who can open it does not. Pulse keeps the result of your last check for 30 days, for you only, so the byline and your lists show the same number without asking Confluence about a link again.

  • The coach in the editor, as a Must fix step such as Repoint 1 link.
  • Page vitals, as a Must fix row that names the links.
  • Causes in the space report and Fix by check on Site, as Links that do not open.
  • The reader notice 1 link on this page leads to a page that no longer exists, shown only to a reader for whom Confluence proved it.
  • Repoint the link to the page that replaced it, in the editor. The coach confirms it at the next check of your draft.
  • Remove the link from Page vitals, without opening the editor. Pulse removes a link only when it names the page by its id (a pasted page address or a smart link) and Confluence shows you that page in the trash. The link’s words stay as plain text. See Changes Pulse can make.
  • Links to other websites. Pulse never fetches web addresses from your pages.
  • Anchors inside a page, attachments and images.
